God has not changed His mind about sin
God never over looked the sins of people in Scriptures. And He will not over look sins today either. God forgives sins but He does not condone or overlook sins (Ezekiel18:21-23). He tells us; ” the soul that sin’s shall die.” (Ezk. 18:20). And, “the wages of sin is death.” (Romans 6:23). God has not changed His mind concerning sin. God tells us that even if a righteous man turns from his righteousness and begins to sin, and fails to repent he will be punished, his past righteousness shall not spare him(Ezekiel18:24-28).
Generational sin and curses
When people speak about generational sin and curses they are referring to the sins of the parents or the fore- parents and the consequences on their descendants.
When we read the Bible we will see Scriptures where God says He would visit the iniquity of the fathers upon their children even to the third and fourth generations. And we will also come across Scriptures where God says that the children will not be punished for the iniquities of their parents.
Here are some of such Scriptural verses:
Exod. 20:5-6, Exod. 34:7,, Num. 14:18, Jer. 32:18, Isa. 65:6-7, Lev. 26:39-42, Jer. 65:6, Job 21:19, Ezek.18:24-28).
If we study these verses well enough and compare them there will be no confusion. To those children who hate God and choose to follow in their fathers iniquity God will visit upon them both their own sins and that of their parents. But for those children who choose to follow God and not follow in the footsteps of their parents iniquity God will spare. God is a good God, He has given us the privilege of repentance and confession of sins. If we confess our sin and those of our parents and forsake them we are completely forgiven.
If you are a genuine believer in His Son, God will not judge you for the sins of your parents or fore-parents.
“Fathers shall not be put to death for their children, nor shall children be put to death for their fathers; a person shall be put to death for his own sin. (Deut. 24:16)
“The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not bear the guilt of the father, nor the father bear the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.” Ezekiel18:20.
“But everyone shall die for his own iniquity. Each man who eats sour grapes, his teeth shall be set on edge.” Jeremiah 31:30-33.
God is good and His mercies endures forever! (Psalm 107:1).
Not under any curse
In this present life Christians are not exempted from troubles (John 16:33). So should problems arise against you as a Christian, always remember that God is not punishing you for your past sins, which He already forgave because of the blood of Christ , and He is not punishing you for the sins of your parents.
Remember also that the Bible teaches that in this present world Satan still has the permission to attack God’s people(Rev.13:7). God’s people are told to resist him through prayer (1 Peter 5: 8-9, James 4:7).
Troubles and sufferings in a Christian’s life is not the consequences of generational sin and curses as being promulgated today. You are not under any curse if you are in Christ Jesus. The Bible teaches that Christ Jesus has redeemed us from the curses of the law. It’s either you believe this Scriptural truth or not, it’s up to you.
13 “Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”). Gal. 3:13.
In Christ Jesus there are no generational curses, only generational blessings:
14 that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.“ (Gal.3:14).
“But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him, and His righteousness to children’s children, To such as keep His covenant, and to those who remember His commandments to do them.” (Psalm 103:17 – 18).
The Bible tells us that we are under God’s grace(Romans 6:14). It’s impossible to be under God’s grace and under His curse at the same time.
Dealing with our sin
What must we do about our sins then?
This is how to treat and deal with our sins:
*We should repent of, confess and forsake our sins.
*We should believe that God has truly forgiven us. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse from all unrighteousness.”(1 John 1:9).
*We should not allow the enemy (Satan) to accuse us or trouble us with condemnation and guilt of already confessed and forgiven sins.
*Like the apostle Paul, we learn to move on, we keep looking forward and not backward.
“Brethren, I do not count myset tyo have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those thiings which are ahead. I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:13-14 ).
In Isaiah 43:18-19, God also tells us to forget the former things and look forward to the new things He is doing.
God cannot lie.
When God said that He will remember our sins no more and that He will cast them into the sea of forgetfulness, it simply means that He will never punish us for any sin confessed and repented of, He will never bring them up against us or use them against us.
How very low and poorly do many Christians think of God, their heavenly Father! God cannot lie.
” God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so he does not change his mind. Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has he ever promised and not carried it through? (Num. 23:19 NLT).
Inexplicable troubles and trials may befall a child of God in this life, but it is not God bringing our past sins to remembrance, it is not God allowing Satan to punish us for past sins, or for the sins of our forebears.
“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” Romans 8:1.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” 2 Cor. 5:17.
God will not judge, punish or condemn us for sins we have repented of and confessed, including those of our parents. Here are some Scriptures you should always remember when plagued with guilt or remembrance of past sins:
“For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more.” Hebrews 8:12 ESV.
“I, I am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and I will not remember your sins.” lsaiah 43:25 ESV.
“Then he adds, “I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.” Hebrews 10:17 ESV.
“As far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.” Psalm 103:12 ESV.
“Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.” Isaiah 1:18 ESV.
Parental Responsibility
As a Christian parent, learn to cover your children in prayer always before God’s mercy seat, ask God diligently for the salvation of their souls, disciple them in the Lord, teach them the fear of God, teach them to love God, teach them God’s ways, especially if they are still young and still living under your roof. Teach your children to have integrity, kindness, to be keepers of their words and never to defraud or cheat anyone, teach them the necessity of righteous living and of doing good to all men, so as not to bring curses upon themselves by being mean or wicked. Christian parents have to teach their children all these because your own righteousness cannot deliver or save your children, they have to know God personally and walk with Him. They have to walk uprightly, treating other people kindly, respectfully and with dignity.
Causeless Curse; Fear not
Proverbs 26:2 says,“Like a fluttering sparrow or a darting swallow, an undeserved curse will not land on its intended victim.”
There is no need to be afraid of curses when you ‘ve done evil to no one. No reason to fear generational curses when Christ has redeemed you from the curse of the law, and your past sins have been forgiven because of the blood of God’s Son. Walk with God, live a life of obedience to Him. And He will be a wall of fire round about you day and night. Trust in God and fear not. God is not against us, He is on our side. Stand solely upon God’s Word, which is truth and endures forever, not on the doctrines of men.
The judgement, condemnation and wrath of God awaits only unrepentant sinners, not the righteous.
